Academia Genius: Media Literacy Framework Policy

Preamble:

At Academia Genius, we recognize the paramount importance of media literacy in today’s digitally driven world. A strong foundation in media literacy empowers individuals to critically analyze online content, understand its implications, protect themselves and their data, and contribute positively to the digital ecosystem. This Media Literacy Framework Policy outlines our commitment to fostering media literacy across our learners, faculty, staff, and the broader community.

Purpose:

This policy aims to provide a clear and comprehensive framework for integrating media literacy into all aspects of Academia Genius, ensuring that all members are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to navigate the online environment safely, responsibly, and effectively.

Guiding Principles:

This Media Literacy Framework is built upon the following five core principles:

  1. Understanding the Risks of Sharing Personal Data Online: Learners, faculty, and staff will understand the potential risks associated with sharing personal data online, including but not limited to data breaches, identity theft, privacy violations, and targeted advertising. They will be educated on data privacy laws and regulations and equipped with practical tools and strategies to safeguard their personal information.

  2. Understanding the Online Environment: Learners, faculty, and staff will develop a comprehensive understanding of the workings of the online environment, including algorithms, search engine optimization (SEO), digital footprints, data tracking, targeted advertising, and online security. They will understand how information is disseminated, curated, and potentially manipulated online.

  3. Critical Analysis of Online Content: Learners, faculty, and staff will cultivate the ability to critically analyze online content, including text, images, audio, and video. This includes evaluating sources for credibility, identifying bias and propaganda, recognizing misinformation and disinformation, verifying information through multiple sources, and understanding the impact of persuasive techniques.

  4. Awareness of Online-Offline Interactions: Learners, faculty, and staff will recognize that online actions have real-world consequences and that online behavior can impact offline relationships, reputation, and well-being. They will be educated on digital citizenship, cyberbullying prevention, and the importance of responsible online communication.

  5. Promoting Positive Online Engagement: Learners, faculty, and staff will be encouraged to engage online actively and constructively, while remaining mindful of potential risks. They will be encouraged to contribute positively to the digital environment by promoting respectful dialogue, empathy, collaboration, and ethical online behavior.
